Getting clean away! Increase is theft of catalytic converters
In the first half of 2019 the theft of catalytic converters was double that for the whole of 2018. The precious metals utilised in the construction of these items make them very attractive to thieves, particularly since they can be removed in a matter of minutes leaving the owners to pick up a very hefty replacement and repair bill often into thousands of pounds.
Hybrid cars are particularly at risk since their converters have less frequent use than conventional vehicles.
Although some car manufacturers are taking steps to safe guard against this crime, owners are advised to take precautions. Indelibly marking the unit, protective coverings, CCTV and alarms are just some of the recommended, preventative measures.
